Accessible Bathroom
Designing accessible bathrooms ensures comfort and safety for everyone, especially for people with disabilities or mobility challenges. While planning renovation, there are key standards to consider, such as the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) guidelines and the Ontario Building Code for residential spaces.
Compliance for Bathrooms:
ADA guidelines apply to public and commercial spaces but can also be used for residential projects to increase accessibility. Here are some important points:
Doorways should be at least 32 inches wide to allow easy access for wheelchairs.
Grab bars must be installed near the toilet and shower for support. They should be placed 33-36 inches off the floor.
- A wheelchair turning radius of at least 60 inches in diameter is essential for easy maneuvering.
- Toilet seat height should be between 17-19 inches, which is slightly higher than standard toilets.
-Showers should have a seat and be at least 30x60 inches. Curbless showers are also recommended to prevent tripping.
Popular items we do for accessible bathrooms/showers:
- Walking shower with no curb known as curb less shower. We use shower bases with Nanobath technology that helps prevent the appearance of fungus and bacterial cultures, and has anti-slip Grade 3*. In additional it’s comfortable to touch.
- Faucets and shower system that operate with single lever which are easiest to use.
- ADA elongated toilets 17-19 inches heights.
- A console sink that provides legroom for seated users.
- Grab bars to offer helping hand.
